Here are 5 ways to save money on your Holiday Grocery Bill.
5. Sorry to those who don't eat pork but holiday hams save you money! Ham is versatile, filling and typically very affordable. Ham is also something that can be used for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I haven't bought bacon in 2 years.
4. Check out the big wholesalers like Sysco Bahamas who often have retail sections that always have sales! We believe that only restaurants and big stores can shop with wholesalers but that's not true. If you're in charge of making all the holidays cakes why not by a huge bag of sugar or flour? Just be prepared to wait a little and it can be worth it.
3. Can we reintroduce POTLUCKS to our communities and neighborhoods? Now I know this is a tall order, but "food fellowship" can change the world. How about inviting that neighbor who you've never spoken with to a Friday night dinner? And tell them to bring over a plate. In times past, dishes like PEAS N'RICE we created from community eating!
2. Freshness saves money. I distinctly remember in culinary school the lecturer telling us to always look at how fresh the fish was and to taste a grape. Because why buy sour grapes that everyone will just throw away. Now I'm telling you to steal samples but if you ask your produce guy they often will. Or check out the precut fruit. They are a good indicator of what is being sold. So if the diced ready-to-go pineapples look yellow and juicy or the diced watermelon is red and firm then chances are the whole fruit are the same.
1. Hopefully all year youve maintained a good rapport with your local fisherman and farmer. Creating great relationships with these hard working ladies and gentlemen is essential. In fact i never have to rush to the market to get first pick, my items are often put aside. Not only that my ten dollar bag is probably your 15 dollar bag. Because I consistently support my local vendors and that always translates into savings!
Honorable mention. Now is the time to tip your favorite suppliers. From the butcher at the market, to your fisherman, to your packing boy. Trust me that makes a huge difference all year round.
